We are looking for volunteer advocates to listen to vulnerable people and respond to their needs by providing holistic support. This is achieved by providing accurate, accessible and relevant information, by supporting and empowering people and by offering a listening ear and confidential support.

Roles and duties:

  • Signpost and support clients into other services and opportunities and where appropriate make referrals to relevant professionals and organisations
  • Give unbiased rights based information in key areas including education, welfare, housing, disability rights, mental and physical health
  • Provide representation in formal proceedings
  • Advocate for clients in official meetings
  • Maintain clear and appropriate communication, including written correspondence and case notes
  • Mediate for clients by making agreed contact with others on their behalf
  • Attend meetings with other professionals and organisations to ensure the concerns of clients are represented
  • Research information and problem solving to support individual cases
  • Provide support to clients to ensure they are given positive and productive assistance

We are looking for people who have:

  • Excellent listening, communication and people skills
  • Respect for peoples’ independence, feelings, beliefs and rights
  • Self-confidence and negotiating skills
  • Commitment to representing peoples’ views, whether you agree with them or not
  • A non-judgemental and open-minded approach
  • The ability to empower people rather than trying to solve problems for them.
